Integrating fine-wool genetics

How can fine-wool sheep fit into other sheep production systems?

NZM is working with a range of New Zealand sheep farmers to determine how higher-performing fine-wool genetics can integrate successfully into different sheep production systems. Growers from Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Manawatu in the North Island, through to Danseys Pass and Roxburgh in the South Island, are trialing fine-wool sheep in what have been meat-focused, strong-wool farming enterprises.

Fine-wool rams are being used in a variety of ways, from a terminal cross over strong-wool ewes to a full-scale breed change towards a 21-23 micron quarterbred breeding ewe flock. Get in touch if you’d like to hear more about the market opportunities for fine wool and be put in touch with experts who can help you get there.

OnFarm Research halfbred trials

In collaboration with OnFarm Research, NZM evaluated the potential for fine-wool sheep to fit into meat-focused, strong-wool farming systems. This work from 2011 to 2013 explored different production systems and looked at how they measure up in terms of livestock returns. For more details of how the trials were run and the results, download the report Evaluating halfbreds in the North Island.
